In Dr. Joe Sanders’ Words: Vision

Colorado UpLift focuses on building long-term, life-changing relationships with urban youth, helping them grow holistically, build strong character, positively engage in their communities, and position themselves for long-term success. One way we support students in this journey is by guiding them to focus on 13-character qualities. These qualities are not only critical for youth but are also highly relevant to us as adults. One of these character qualities is VISION. As we close out the current year and move into 2025, it is an ideal time for all of us to reflect on our future and set a clear vision. While vision provides a window into new future possibilities, it also serves to shape our being and actions in the present.

For students, this gives them an opportunity to think about the person they want to be, the goals they want to achieve, and the life they want to build. A vision goes beyond academic or career aspirations; it is about developing a deeper sense of purpose that influences every aspect of life. A strong vision serves as a compass and a catalyst, helping to guide students through obstacles, motivating them to stay on track, and empowering them to move forward with confidence.

The same can be said for adults. A vision maintains focus and clarity, even when life gets chaotic or unsure. The start of a new year is the perfect time to reassess where we are and where we want to go. As adults, we can get bogged down in the daily routine—balancing work, family, and personal responsibilities. It can be easy to lose sight of our goals. By setting a vision, we can reflect on what truly matters, both personally and professionally. It is a time to celebrate what we have accomplished and a time to welcome new goals. Whether it is embarking on a career change, nurturing deeper relationships, or finding more balance and joy in daily life, setting a vision lets us approach the future and the present with fresh eyes and a new purpose. It is a reminder that it is not too late to reimagine a life that aligns with our deepest values.

The new year offers a fresh start—a chance to dream big, set meaningful goals, and take deliberate steps toward a brighter tomorrow. It is an invitation to step into the new year with clarity and to imagine the future we want to create. Whether we are students just beginning our journey or adults reflecting on how far we have come, vision can be the spark for transformative change...starting today!

Stay tuned throughout 2025 as we introduce the remaining 12-character qualities and how they benefit our students and provide insight to us as adults. Happy New Year!
